THE STORY OF THIS PHASERS
In the 1970s, MXR™ Innovations, defined the sound of electric guitar and keyboard modulation with their line of rugged, colorful pedals. While the Phase 90 became a legend, its more sophisticated siblings, the M110 AutoPhaser rack device and M101 Phase 45 pedal, offered unique sonic signatures that studio producers prized.
AutoPhaser faithfully recreates the OTA (Operational Transconductance Amplifier) core of these units, including the specific high-pass pre-filter and Emphasis/De-emphasis EQ curves that give them their characteristic bite and warmth.
We’ve combined both units into one RE and added the controls the originals lacked: Wet/Dry Mix, independent Depth and Rate for the LFO, and modern connectivity. Furthermore, we’ve implemented the M110’s unique operational logic where the LFO and Envelope Follower work simultaneously, summed together to create complex, evolving modulation that stays musical and organic.
MAIN CONTROLS

MODE (AUTO / TH45): Switch between the core phaser circuit:
- AutoPhaser: 6-Stage OTA design. Dramatic, wide swoosh with a percussive attack.
- TH45 (Phase 45 pedal style): 2-Stage OTA design. Subtle, warm, vocal-like thickening.
MANUAL: Sets the base frequency around which the All-Pass Filters operate (100Hz - 10kHz or 100 Hz - 1000 Hz by slected mode). This also determines the “center” of the sweep.
SWEEP DEPTH: Determines the intensity of the internal LFO modulation applied.
SWEEP RATE / SWEEP BEATS: Sets the speed of the internal LFO.
- Free Hz Mode: 0.1 Hz to 10 Hz.
- Synced Beats mode: 8/4 to 1/64D.
SYNC: Toggles the Sweep Rate between free-running Hz and Tempo-Synced musical values (e.g., 1/4, 1/8, etc).
MIX: Blends the dry input signal with the wet phased signal. 0% is fully dry, 100% is fully wet.
PHASE (LFO OFFSET): Active only in Manual Mode. Adjusts the phase offset of the LFO wave (0° - 360°). Useful for creating stereo width effects when routed creatively.
ENV FOLLOWER MODES:
- Stock (Default): Locks the Envelope Trim to the fixed calibration in style of the vintage hardware.
- Manual: Enables the front panel Envelope Trim knob for user control.
ENV TRIM: Active only in Manual Mode. Acts as the sensitivity control for the Envelope Follower, determining how much your playing dynamics affect the phase
INPUT, OUTPUT levels: Sets the gain staging entering and exiting the device.
REAR PANEL CONTROLS

ENV FOLLOWER MODE: Determines how the incoming signal is read.
- Linear (Default): Replicates the full-wave rectifier of the original hardware. Accurate and dynamic.
- Log: A logarithmic response, making the envelope more sensitive to quieter signals.
- Gate: Acts like a noise gate for the envelope; the phaser only triggers when the signal exceeds the threshold aggressively.
ATTACK: Set the ballistics of the envelope follower to form the signal attack time.
Fast attack (low ms) makes the phaser snap open on hits
RELEASE: Set the ballistics of the envelope follower to form the signal release time. Slow release creates a long, smooth decay
THRESHOLD: The level the incoming signal must reach to trigger the envelope follower.
ANALOG HISS: Adds a very low-level modeled analog noise floor for vintage authenticity when desired. Keep at 0% for pristine modern mixes
PHASE INVERT: Flips the polarity of the envelope. Instead of sweeping up in frequency when you play louder, it will sweep down.
DESTINATION: Selects which parameter is modulated by the Envelope Follower.
- Manual (Delay Time - Default): The classic AutoFlanger behavior.
- Depth, Rate, Regen, Phase, Mix: Allows you to create wild, dynamic patches where your playing controls LFO speed, feedback amount, or stereo width.
TIPS & TRICKS
The AutoPhase “Quack”: In Auto mode, set Mix to 50%, Sweep Depth (LFO) to 0%, and use the Envelope Follower (Stock or Manual mode) to control Manual knob. Play staccato funk guitar or percussive synth lines to get a percussive, envelope-controlled filter “quack” that is distinct from a standard auto-wah.
Phase 45 Pad Thickness: In TH45 mode, use a very slow Sweep Rate and high Sweep Depth. Set Mix to about 40%. Play sustained pads or Rhodes chords for a thick, chewy, slow-motion swirl that doesn’t get glassy or harsh.
Stereo Width: Set Env. Follower Destination to Phase. Send a fast, rhythmic CV signal (like a gated LFO or Matrix pattern) into the Phase CV input on the rear panel. This will make the LFO center point jump around in the stereo field in sync with your track.
The “Cocked” Phaser: Set Sweep Depth (LFO) to 0% and Env. Follower Mode to Stock (or Manual with Trim at 0). Now use the front panel Manual knob to find a static, hollow “cocked wah” tone that sits perfectly in a dense mix.
CV Overdose: Patch the output of the RPG-8 Arpeggiator CV out into the Rate CV input. Set
AutoPhaser to TH45 mode, Sync to ON, and play chords. The arpeggiator will now control the speed of the phaser swoosh rhythmically as it plays notes.
