The Story of DeepReso: The Breath of God
In the world of audio engineering, certain pieces of hardware achieve legendary status not just for what they do, but for how they do it. The Little Labs VOG (Voice of God) is one such device. Born from a need to make bass frequencies truly impactful and present, it quickly became an indispensable tool for top engineers looking to dial in that elusive “breath” or “growl” in the low end. It wasn’t just boosting; it was sculpting a dimension into the sound.
Inspired by this philosophy – the idea of making the low-end not just loud, but alive – we embarked on creating DeepReso. Our goal was to capture the essence of what made the VOG so special: its unique resonant character, its effortless ability to make bass lines sit perfectly, and its intuitive control scheme.
DeepReso is re-imagined as the “Breath of God” (BOG) – a powerful, organic force that gives life to the lowest registers of your music. We’ve meticulously designed its internal workings to repeat idea with some small additions and changes, ensuring that while it lives in your modern rack, it breathes with the soul of classic hardware. DeepReso isn’t just a simple fx; it’s an invitation to experience that legendary low-end magic in your own productions.
MAIN CONTROLS
FREQUENCY: Set the specific low frequency that the resonant filter will boost. Turn this knob to “tune” into the fundamental frequency of your bass instrument or kick drum, finding the sweet spot where the low end springs to life. Range: 40 - 300 Hz
AMPLITUDE: Controls the amount of boost applied at the selected CENTER frequency. Turn this up to increase the intensity and presence of the resonance. Start subtle and increase until the low end feels powerful but not overwhelming.
CENTER: Dramatically shape the overall low-end character around your main resonanc:
- FLAT: Disables any broad low-frequency shaping, allowing the CENTER resonance to operate independently.
- 40 Hz: Applies a broad boost at 40 Hz, emphasizing the deep sub-bass frequencies for powerful rumble and weight.
- 100 Hz: Applies a broad boost at 100 Hz, adding warmth and fullness to the mid-bass region. Great for thickening up kicks and bass guitars.
- 200 Hz: Applies a gentle cut at 200 Hz. This helps to clean up muddiness or boominess in the low-mids, often making the lower resonance more defined and articulate.
BLEND: Blends the original (dry) signal with processed (wet) signal. This is excellent for parallel processing, allowing you to retain the original signal’s transients while blending in the enhanced low end.
PHASE: Inverts the phase of the output signal. Useful for correcting phase issues when combining multiple low-frequency sources or for creative effects.
GAIN: Sets signal level after DeepReso’s processing. Control output with meter, that you’re not clipping output signal.
FX ACTIVITY: FX On / Bypass switch for the effect. Variation of effect bypass with fade in and fade out, that excludes loud peaks when you enable or disable the effect
How To Use It Right
1. Insert DeepReso: Place DeepReso on the track you want to enhance (e.g., kick drum, bass guitar, 808, bass synth, or even a full mix bus).
2. Set Input Level: Play your audio. Adjust the gain before DeepReso (or use the MIX knob if needed)
3. Find the Center: Slowly sweep the Frequency while listening carefully. You’ll hear a specific frequency jump out and resonate. This is often the fundamental frequency of your instrument. Find the spot where your low-end feels the most powerful and satisfying.
4. Dial in Amplitude: Once you’ve found your CENTER frequency (by switching modes), use the AMPLITUDE knob to dial in the amount of boost. Start with a subtle amount and increase until it feels right – punchy and present, but not overpowering.
5. Shape the Low End: Experiment with the Frequency Buttons (FLAT, 40, 100, 200).
- If your low end is booming, try 200 Hz to gently scoop out muddiness.
- If you need more sub-bass rumble, hit 40 Hz.
- For a warmer, thicker mid-bass, try 100 Hz.
- Use FLAT if the main resonance is all you need.
6. Adjust Mix: Use the Blend (DRY/WET) knob. Often, blending in the effect (e.g., 50-80% wet) yields the most natural and powerful results, preserving transients while adding the DeepReso magic.
7. Match Output Level: Use the OUTPUT GAIN to match the perceived loudness of the processed signal to the bypassed signal. This ensures you’re not fooled by “louder is better.”
8. Check Phase: If you’re mixing multiple low-frequency elements, or if your bass sounds weak, try toggling the PHASE Ø button. Sometimes a phase flip can dramatically improve alignment.
9. A/B Compare: Constantly use the BYPASS button to ensure DeepReso is improving your sound.
BETTER FOR
This is a specialist tool for low frequencies, making it incredibly effective on a variety of sources:
Kick Drums: Add weight, punch, and definition to the fundamental thump. DeepReso can make your kick drum feel bigger and hit harder.
Bass Guitars: Give electric or acoustic bass a solid foundation, making it feel more powerful and present in the mix. Sculpt specific frequencies to cut through without being boomy.
808s & Sub Bass Synths: Enhance the core tone, add harmonic richness, and ensure these crucial low elements translate well on any playback system. DeepReso can turn a simple sine wave into a monster.
Basslines & Bass Synths: Bring life and depth to any synth or sampled bass sound, making it feel more organic and impactful.
Full Mix Bus (Subtle Use): When used sparingly on the entire mix, DeepReso can subtly enhance the overall low-end glue and impact, giving your track a finished, professional weight. Be careful not to overdo it here!
Drums Bus: Apply to a drum bus to give the entire kit more low-end foundation, particularly helping the kick and tom resonates.
DeepReso is your secret weapon for a low end that’s felt as much as it’s heard. Experiment, listen, and unleash the BOG!
