Evolving Stepwise Harmonies
AstroPath is a MIDI Player Rack Extension that generates evolving harmonies from the notes you play. Unlike traditional harmonizers that apply the same intervals to every note, AstroPath uses an eight-step sequence to change the harmony as your melody progresses. Each step can contain up to three additional harmony voices, allowing a single note to produce a four-note chord. Set different intervals for each step to create moving chord progressions, changing voicings, and layered melodic arrangements. The original notes pass through unchanged, preserving your performance while adding harmonies around it.
Flexible Harmony and Scale Control
AstroPath includes nine scales and modes, including Major, Minor, Dorian, Lydian, Harmonic Minor, and Chromatic. Harmony intervals are calculated using scale degrees, keeping the added voices in key as you play different notes. Each of the eight steps has its own primary harmony control and two independently adjustable secondary voices, giving you detailed control over chord structures and voicings. Multiple playback modes, including Forward, Backward, Pendulum, and Brownian, provide different ways to navigate the harmony sequence. Adjust the number of active steps to create anything from repeating two-chord patterns to longer, evolving progressions.
Timing, Expression, and Performance
AstroPath includes timing and performance controls that determine how harmonies respond to your playing. The Slack parameter controls whether closely played notes share the same harmony step or advance the sequence, making the device suitable for both individual melodies and full chords. Adjustable Reset timing allows new phrases to restart the sequence automatically, while Harmony Delay can create delayed chords and call-and-response effects. Independent velocity controls for the original notes and added harmonies let you balance their levels. Key Lock, manual sequence reset, and adjustable starting steps provide additional control during performance and automation.
Extensive CV Integration
AstroPath extends beyond MIDI harmonization with dedicated CV connections for external control and routing. CV inputs allow you to modulate timing, velocity, active step count, sequence advancement, and reset behavior from other Reason devices. Separate pitch and gate outputs are provided for the original note and all three harmony voices, allowing each voice to control a different synthesizer or instrument in your rack. This makes it possible to create multi-instrument arrangements from a single MIDI performance, with independent sounds and processing for each harmony part.
