The year is 1994. The pilot episode of Friends has just debuted on NBC, Nelson Mandela has been elected president of South Africa and you’re a young and aspiring producer who has just gotten your hands on ‘ReCycle – the perfect tool for sampled grooves’.

These days, it’s less ‘perfect tool for sampled grooves' and more 'old-school-tool for sampled grooves’. But back when it was originally released, this sample tool was the go-to for producing grassroots electronic genres of the 90’s. Almost 30 years later we gave it hi-res graphics, made it compatible with Apple Silicon and added some back-end stuff for performance. An ode to all the legendary producers and artists that kept ReCycle alive throughout the years.

Before giving our beloved ReCycle a facelift, we asked ourselves “does ReCycle have a place in today’s musical landscape?”.

We think it does. And even if it didn’t, ReCycle just refuses to die. After all these years, many people swear by ReCycle as their go-to sample tool, and given the cultural time capsule that it is today we want new generations to be able to experience what the workflow was like 30 years ago.

Slice your sampled loops and turn them from rigid recordings to flexible musical elements that blend seamlessly with your music. ReCycle slices loops into their rhythmical components, letting you quantize, rearrange or totally reimagine your sampled grooves.

Maybe you’ll fall in love with its old-school workflow. Maybe you’ll use it once, smile, and go back to your usual ways. Either way, we’re giving everyone a chance to experience a tool that helped shape modern sampling into what we’ve come to know today.

how it's done

slice

ReCycle finds all the transients in your sampled material and slices your loop up, while also keeping the timing information so you can play it back at any tempo without losing its feel or with the artifacts that come from time stretch.

tweak

Sculpt your sound with ReCycle’s built-in effects: Transient Shaper, EQ, Envelope and a stretch feature that stretches the tail end of each slice in the loop.

create

Save your loops as REX files and let the fun begin. With ReCycled audio, your loops can be arranged, rearranged have their timing altered or even be used as a groove template for your song.

what's next?

When you’re done cutting and looping your sample, it’s saved as a REX file – a file format that can be used in most modern DAW:s. We’d recommend dropping it into Reason, using Dr. Octo Rex Loop Player or Kong Drum Designer for endless tweaking of your future masterpieces (and disasterpieces).

the rex file format

REX is the native file format of ReCycle. A REX file contains the original audio of the loop, the slices you have applied in ReCycle, and any effects or processing you have added in ReCycle. REX files are also compressed, using a non-lossy compression technique to save some precious hard drive space. The REX technology is available for third parties and has become the de facto standard for loop handling in just about every DAW.

REX – The industry standard.
