Introducing Seán Murray, a prominent sound pack producer who has been with us since the launch of Reason+. With over a hundred sound packs released, it’s time to delve deeper into his creative realm. Today, the spotlight shines on Seán Murray!
What device or feature of Reason do you like the most?
The Reason Rack Plugin! Being able to use the instruments and devices in any DAW was a game changer for me. And when working on live show, it opens up the possibility to use sound packs live on stage, which is incredibly exciting.
As a saturation guy, I’m loving Osmium Distortion Matrix. It’s so powerful – for just adding some subtle flavour or a crazy modulated texture. I’ve been using it in some recent sound packs and it’s been really great.
What do you find most rewarding about creating sound packs?
Being able to explore different genres and styles is incredibly rewarding and a great learning experience, especially if it’s a genre that I haven’t explored before!
Are there any surprising aspects of your work style?
I often produce sound packs on my laptop in coffee shops or while traveling! While I always test things on my speakers and the playability of the patches on a keyboard before submitting, a lot of the initial demo song creation and sound exploring for me happens outside of the studio.
Which of your sound packs was the most satisfying to produce?
It’s hard to pick a favourite, but I remember the process of Garage Pop Vol. 2 well! I wrote the chord progression and drum loop for the demo song first and remember the sound design kinda falling into place afterwards. It’s a perfect blend of dance and pop for me – an uplifting chord progression and weird UK Garage-inspired electronic textures on top.
That and the two Algoritm launch packs – 80s Synths and DnB basses. Working on two wildly different genres at the same time was great fun.
What are you currently working on aside from sound pack production?
I’m currently in the process of setting up a London-based Music Direction collective offering bespoke Music Direction and Live Show Creation for touring artists! It’s still a work in progress, but I’m very exited to get it up and running.
